How to choose POS software for a shop in Sri Lanka

By Shenzee Tech · Published 14 October 2026 · 2 min read

Point of sale (POS) software handles billing at the counter and keeps your stock and sales records in one place. Choosing well saves you from re-entering data later, so it is worth checking a few things before you commit.

Start with the counter

  • Fast billing: can a cashier finish a sale in a few taps or scans, even at the busiest hour?
  • Barcode scanning and a product search that finds items by name or code.
  • Receipts: thermal printer support, your shop name and logo, and a clear invoice for customers who ask.
  • Discounts, returns and held bills handled without calling the manager each time.
  • Cash, card and credit sales recorded separately.

Then check the back office

  • Stock levels that update after every sale, with low-stock alerts.
  • Purchases and suppliers, so cost prices are recorded as stock comes in.
  • Stock costing that matches how you work, such as FIFO or LIFO.
  • Customer credit and payments, if you sell on account.
  • Reports for daily sales, profit by product, expenses and stock value.
  • Staff accounts with roles, so a cashier cannot change prices or see profit.

Questions that matter in Sri Lanka

  1. Does it keep working when the internet drops, and sync afterwards?
  2. Are prices shown in rupees, and is it priced in rupees, not dollars that move with the exchange rate?
  3. Can you get support by phone or WhatsApp, in your working hours?
  4. Does it handle more than one branch if you plan to grow?
  5. Can you export your data if you ever move to another system?

Try before you pay

Ask for a trial and run a normal day through it: a few dozen real sales, a return, a stock purchase and an end of day report. Count how many steps your busiest cashier needs. If it feels slow in a trial, it will feel slower on a busy Saturday.

Nexsora POS is our own cloud POS for shops in Sri Lanka, with FIFO and LIFO stock costing and plans priced in rupees. Compare it against any other option using the checklist above.
